The City of New Iberia appointed Acting Chief Brandon Williams as interim provisional police chief effective immediately after the council learned the sitting chief had passed away.
Mayor explained the civil service board will hold an emergency meeting next week to trigger preparation of the required civil service test for the chief's vacancy; the process includes a 30-day advertisement, testing, state grading and interviews. Mayor said the recruitment and selection process could take a few months and indicated that, if selected through the process, the city would bring a recommended candidate back to the council for ratification. Brandon Williams spoke to accept the temporary assignment and said he was prepared to lead the department during the transition. Multiple council members offered condolences for the late chief and pledged support for the department and the Williams as interim chief.
