North Shore SD 112 to move SAIL and ILP special-education programs to Ravinia next year

The district will consolidate its Social Academic Integrated Learning (SAIL) and Individualized Learning Program (ILP) from Braeside and Sherwood into Ravinia School beginning 2025–26, with facility modifications, staff training and family engagement planned to support an inclusive model.
At the April 8 Committee of the Whole meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Dr. Holly Colin and Ravinia Principal Courtney Gilkison presented plans to relocate the district’s Social Academic Integrated Learning (SAIL) and Individualized Learning Program (ILP) into a single site at Ravinia School beginning in the 2025–26 school year.
Colin said the consolidation stems from a recommendation in the district’s 2019–20 comprehensive student services program review by DM Group and will be supported by a planned building addition at Ravinia. “The concept to shift the two programs from Braeside and Sherwood to one site stemmed from one of the recommendations from the 2019-20 comprehensive student services program review completed by DM Group,” she said. The administration described ongoing collaboration with stakeholders—principals, coaches and families—to prepare students, staff and parents for the move.
Administrators described specific inclusion-focused supports: professional development and coaching (including participation in the TrueNorth Cohort for Inclusive School Leadership in Action), a partnership with Educating Outside the Lines to provide differentiated programming, contracting with the Maryland Coalition of Inclusive Education for onsite technical assistance, and a peer-buddy program to pair general-education students with SAIL/ILP students. Fourth-grade students from Ravinia are scheduled to visit Sherwood and Braeside in May to meet incoming peers and participate in planned activities.
The district said architects are designing specialized classroom furniture, a sensory garden and a fully accessible playground to support the programs. Administrators noted family engagement through dedicated ILP and SAIL family sessions, a parent survey, informal parent coffees and parent workshops funded by a mini-grant from the Illinois Alliance of Administrators of Special Education. Board members thanked administration for the planning and said they look forward to updates on the transition; no formal vote was taken on the item.
