North Shore SD 112 outlines upgraded radios, revised emergency plan and SRP adoption in annual safety update

At the April 8 Committee of the Whole meeting held at Northwood Middle School, Solveig Jurmu, the district’s Director of Safety and Security, presented the district’s annual safety and security update to the Board of Education.

Jurmu said the district has “made security a high priority to ensure students and staff feel safe, reduce anxiety, and provide the best learning environment.” She described several operational and physical changes: a revised Emergency Operation Plan that has been shared with staff, enhanced partnerships and training with local law enforcement and emergency services, installation of surveillance cameras and electronic door locks, visitor-management screening systems, and upgraded intercoms. Jurmu also described a planned summer rollout of new two-way radio guidelines and installation of bidirectional antennas to improve communications for emergency responders inside school buildings.

The district reported it has shifted to the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) for incident responses and trained staff on the SRP actions—Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate and Shelter—to create a consistent framework across schools. Jurmu said a District Safety Committee composed of teachers and administrators has begun meeting and has discussed classroom emergency backpacks, bleeding-control kits and consistent radio procedures.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Lubelfeld and board members thanked Jurmu for the review. There was no public comment on the item. The presentation did not include a vote; the update was presented for information and the board expressed appreciation for the work and next steps, including radio fleet refresh and identification of reunification sites.
