Director outlines Bulldog Drive traffic changes; striping, turn lanes to be ready before school

District transportation staff presented an update on traffic improvements around Smyrna High School, saying contractors and TDOT have committed to new turning lanes and striping to ease student drop-off and event traffic.
Transportation official Eric Lee walked the board through the plan for additional westbound and eastbound turn lanes and a reconfigured bus entrance that will create two inbound lanes and expanded exit lanes. Staff told the board that all striping on Bulldog Drive would be completed by Sunday (temporary if needed by Thursday night) and that permanent signals related to the new pattern would be activated later (the new traffic signals were not expected to be operable until Aug. 13). The plan also includes a fence along Bulldog Drive and bus-only entrance routing to separate bus circulation from general vehicle traffic.
"All striping on Bulldog Drive will be completed by Sunday," transportation staff said, adding that contingency plans exist if weather delays striping. The school plans to distribute a new traffic pattern to contractors and parents and to coordinate with the sheriff's office for drop-off routing.
