A committee member who identified himself as a surveyor asked why Oconee County requires an additional 25 feet beyond the state 33-foot right-of-way on some roads. "Why does Oconee County need an additional 25 feet past that 33 foot?" he asked during the meeting.
Tom Marcovich and other speakers traced the issue to historical road-acceptance practices and county standards: Marcovich said counties accepted roads from the state and later set higher standards, including requiring a 50-foot right-of-way for roads the county would accept. Ms. Hester told the committee that setbacks in every zoning class "are gonna be addressed" as part of the ordinance review and that staff have not yet reached that section of the draft.
Committee members debated whether to make a formal motion to study the 25-foot issue; the Chair favored letting staff continue the ongoing review and Ms. Hester said she would make a note to bring the concern to the planning commission rather than starting a separate directive during the meeting.
