Planning committee hears update on multi-chapter Oconee County ordinance rewrite

The Planning and Economic Development Committee met Aug. 4, 2026, to receive a staff update on the county’s effort to rewrite Chapters 26, 32 and 38 of the Oconee County Code of Ordinances. Planning Director Ms. Hester told the committee she will compile public comments and submit them to the council and the planning commission for review.
Ms. Hester said two public information meetings were held July 29 and July 30 and that the online comment portal “is still open, and that will be open through the end of September.” She warned the planning commission plans to “take the time necessary to thoroughly review each topic before making the recommendations,” and that approach could slow the schedule for delivering draft ordinance language.
Staff described the ordinance revision as extensive and interdependent across chapters. Ms. Hester said workshops are intended as working sessions to help staff draft clear language and that updated drafts and project milestones will be provided to both the planning commission and the committee as the process moves forward.
The committee did not adopt any ordinance language at the meeting; Ms. Hester asked members to let staff complete the full review of each section before proposing individual changes, noting some items may be deferred to next year because of cross-chapter implications.
