The Elko County Fire Commission voted to approve an interlocal memorandum of understanding with the City of Wells that the chief said will fund a full‑time firefighter position in Wells.
The chief reported that "City of Wells will pay the county $100,000" and that the City also budgeted an additional "$30,000 for facilities maintenance operations for City of Wells equipment and the well station." Jason Panghelli, speaking for the City of Wells, confirmed the City had reviewed the documents and approved a recent wording change clarifying that the $30,000 covers utilities and operations for volunteer facilities.
A commissioner explained the arrangement as mutually beneficial mutual aid and said the $100,000 contribution "makes this happen" by enabling the additional firefighter. The board approved a motion to adopt the MOU as written and to concurrently approve the updated annual operations plan; the commission directed staff to date the operations plan to the meeting date and to note the MOU as "amended and adopted" so the documents are linked.
Commission discussion included a clarifying question about whether the $100,000 covers salary and benefits; the chief confirmed it does. The commission proceeded to a voice vote and the motion carried. The new firefighter position will be processed through the county's hiring procedures and, if added, would be included in payroll beginning the next fiscal year as directed to budget staff.
