The River Forest SD 90 Board of Education approved changes to the Roosevelt Middle School daily schedule at its Committee of the Whole meeting on March 4, 2025. The motion, moved by Dr. Nicole Thompson and seconded by Mrs. Kathleen Avalos, passed on a roll-call vote of five in favor and one opposed.
Principal Tina Steketee outlined the specific timing changes, telling the board, "Passing periods will be reduced to three minutes, and lunch and recess will be reduced to twenty minutes each, while Class blocks will be reduced to 77 minutes." Assistant Principal Anthony Petersen presented a side-by-side comparison of the current and proposed schedules, and Chief Operations Officer Anthony Cozzi presented the financial impact of the proposed changes. Superintendent Dr. Edward Condon thanked the building leadership team and staff for their work on the proposal.
Board members engaged in a lengthy discussion before voting. The official roll call on the schedule modification recorded ayes from Mrs. Avalos, Ms. Stacey Williams, Dr. Thompson, Dr. Kristine Mackey and Mrs. Sarah Eckmann; Dr. Eric Isenberg cast the lone nay. The board did not specify an implementation date in the meeting record.
The change keeps daily blocks for English language arts and math and preserves daily world language and physical education, while reallocating exploratory minutes and shortening transition and meal times. District officials presented the financial implications, but no dollar amounts were provided in the public record at the meeting. Board members indicated the item had been developed with input from the building leadership team and classroom staff.
