County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners the county received notice that a $600,000 SEID grant to begin a trail from Fort Benning has been awarded. Weaver said the county must confirm it is interested before Dec. 4 so planners can begin scheduling and that the design and engineering selection process will follow.
At the Dec. 22 work session Weaver discussed route feasibility and recommended selecting an engineer from a short list; he suggested EMC Engineering as a preferred consultant based on the scoring process. Weaver said earlier alignment ideas (a trail from West Railroad to the recreation center) may not be feasible and that the county is considering building a sidewalk from the library to the rec center as a complementary or alternative project that could fit the grant. He said SEID grants can be slow to develop but called the award "a huge deal" for the county.
Commissioners directed staff to include the engineering selection and related procurement items on an upcoming agenda so the board can formally approve a consultant and authorize preliminary work.
