Committee adopts amendment creating Children's Digital Protection Fund

Chairman Watson described SB 2061 as a vehicle to collect money recovered in lawsuits involving technology companies that harm minors and place those funds into a new Children's Digital Protection Fund. "This will provide, a source of revenue for the state for mental health services, suicide prevention initiatives, research on the impact of social media and technology on children's mental health," the chairman said while outlining intended uses.
The committee adopted an amendment changing the appropriation authority from the treasurer to the General Assembly and, after no further questions, recommended the bill for passage to the calendar committee with a roll call of 11 ayes and no nays.
