Saint Louis poet laureate Haisha Elaine reports busy summer, Brickline Greenway poem and upcoming honors

Poet Laureate Haisha Elaine told the task force Aug. 3 she performed at Music at the Intersection, Jazz St. Louis, will share a commission poem for the Brickline Greenway and will be honored at a Bread and Roses event on Aug. 20.
Poet Laureate Haisha Elaine updated the task force on a series of community events and commissions she took part in over the summer. She described Music at the Intersection and Jazz St. Louis engagements as "probably one of the best, poetic experiences of my creative life," and said she collaborated with musicians for rehearsals and live performances.
Elaine said she will present a commission poem for the Brickline Greenway at an August art party and will appear on Spectrum News with Brock Seals. She is scheduled to host the Whitaker Stage at the Festival of Nations at the end of August and said Bread and Roses invited her to be an honoree on Aug. 20. Elaine emphasized paid opportunities for poets at festival slots and asked for equal marketing for poetry acts.
Members congratulated Elaine on recent work and her upcoming honors. Chair said she will look into tickets or a table for the Bread and Roses event and expressed support for ensuring poets receive equitable compensation and marketing when included in larger festivals.
