The Crockett City Council voted Aug. 3 to adopt a proposed tax rate of $0.77 per $100 of taxable value and to begin the required public‑notice process. Staff said the rate is roughly 13.5¢ above the no‑new‑revenue rate and was presented to fund a 10% cost‑of‑living adjustment (COLA) for city employees and increased maintenance and street department spending.
"The proposed tax rate is 77¢, and that is a 13.5 above the no new revenue rate," the staff member said, noting the proposal would increase the annual city property tax for a $100,000 homestead by about $92 (about $7.70 per month). Staff also described planned utility adjustments: a combined $3.11 monthly impact for water and sewer (a $1.53 and $1.58 base increase) and a 3% garbage collection pass‑through from the contractor that would add about $0.66 per month.
Council members debated the distributional impact of the COLA and the extent to which fixed‑cost staffing and overtime drive the budget. One member moved to adopt the proposed rate to meet department needs and provide the COLA; the motion was seconded and carried. Staff will post the draft budget and proposed tax rate, print materials for public inspection, and schedule the required public hearing(s) before a final rate is adopted.
