Public works outlines spring maintenance, irrigation upgrades and fire-fuel reduction

Public Works Director Tony Boyd told the Parks & Open Space Committee the department is preparing for an early flush of vegetation this spring and will balance landscape maintenance and weed removal with weather forecasts to avoid duplicative work if late rains return.
"And with this early warm weather this year, we expect a flush of vegetation and weeds," Boyd said, adding that maintenance supervisors will time trimming and irrigation tune-ups to minimize repeat work. He said recent irrigation upgrades included replacing clogged drip irrigation with shrub bubblers around the tennis courts to improve reliability during summer.
Boyd also reported a resident donation that funded six new trees near the Lagoon Road parking lot; locations and species were chosen on the recommendation of the city's landscape architects to augment existing plantings. He said the department plans early-summer fire fuel reduction in several open-space areas, including West Shore Road, Artist View property and Pagoda Lane, and will continue tree work in lanes to address overhanging branches and blocked street lamps.
Committee members asked staff to coordinate tree trimming and any potential removals with neighbors, and noted the city's tree code is under review to clarify how public and private tree work is handled.
