Area Agency on Aging urges seniors to join special-needs registry and prepare emergency 'to-go' bags
Summary
January Brown, director of the Area Agency on Aging, told commissioners older adults should enroll in Carteret Countys special-needs registry, maintain a 24-hour emergency bag with medications and documentation, and beware of post-storm scams; the registry application is online and takes about two pages to complete.

January Brown, director of the Area Agency on Aging, urged Peletier residents to register older adults and people with disabilities on Carteret Countys special-needs registry so emergency managers can pre-identify needs, communicate before storms, and coordinate transport to appropriate shelters. "The application is online. It only takes back. It's only about 2 pages," Brown said, and she asked the board and town staff to help publicize the registry and preparedness materials.
Brown also emphasized ready-to-go emergency bags for older adults and caregivers, including medications, advance directives, hearing-aid batteries and phone chargers, and described outreach the agency has done: "We've done over 1000 bags since COVID happened." She warned residents to verify contractors are North Carolina licensed and bonded after storms and to avoid up-front payments to unfamiliar vendors. A commissioner asked Brown to send the application link so the town can post it on its Facebook page.
