Fire Chief Glenn told the Peletier board that July recorded 202 calls, bringing the department to 1,302 calls year-to-date — roughly 40 more calls than at the same time last year — and highlighted improvements in turnout times and crew training. “We finished up our first ever fire camp at 65 total campers,” Glenn said, noting the program exceeded expectations and bolstered community relations.
Glenn also described equipment and cost tradeoffs: the department bought a quick-response Ford Explorer to reduce mileage and wear on the main engine and save operating costs. He gave examples of equipment expenses — a set of tires for the engine runs about $6,000 while replacement tires for the Explorer cost roughly $1,000 and the Explorer gets far better fuel economy — and said the new vehicle should be on the road within weeks after striping and radio installation. Glenn warned the board the department has responded to several recent structure fires and that new regional dispatching rules to meet NFPA 1710 staffing expectations may increase mutual-aid responses.
