Work session pushes Riverbend Park, welcome-center and campsites projects using Hotel/Motel and SPLOST funds

At the July 28 work session County Manager Thomas Weaver presented several tourism and recreation proposals to spend Hotel/Motel and SPLOST funds. Weaver asked the Commission to authorize quotes and planning for a welcome center inside city hall, to repair and add facilities at Riverbend Park including a fishing pier, and to develop campsites with power and septic to attract visitors. Weaver said the Hotel/Motel account balance is $813,251.00 and that the county has collected more than $500,000 in 2025 SPLOST receipts.
Weaver asked staff to get cost estimates for a dock, campsite power and well options and suggested exploring part-time weekend staff to manage visitor amenities. Chairman Coffey suggested checking previously prepared Riverbend Park materials and asked staff to circulate them; the Commission agreed to add the spending proposals to the August regular meeting agenda for formal action if quotes are available.
