Council introduced Ordinance 13-36 to change zoning of a proposed data center site from M-1 to M-2 (heavy industrial), saying stricter zoning may better protect the community. "So what I'm asking is that we zone it to M-2 heavy industry," the presiding official said when initiating the ordinance.
During public comment a resident urged caution and requested a moratorium on data centers, arguing they can affect water supply, create noise problems and impose long-term environmental impacts. "These data centers impact not just our lives, but our children's coming generations," the speaker said, adding that in other places data centers had strained water resources and produced ongoing noise. The council did not adopt an immediate moratorium at the meeting but acknowledged the concerns as it advanced the proposed zoning change for consideration.
