Sheriff's Office reports drop in investigated deaths in 2025 but ongoing overdose and suicide concerns

Dan Fisher, speaking for the Elko County Sheriff's Office, told the board that 2025 saw 146 investigated deaths — the lowest number since the COVID years and 27 fewer than the previous year — and that the office has opened 42 investigations so far this year. He clarified those figures represent deaths that require sheriff's investigation (suspicious or outside of a physician's care), not all county deaths.

Fisher detailed suicide and overdose patterns: he said 15 suicides occurred in 2025 and that the 15–44 age bracket accounted for roughly half of those incidents; confirmed overdoses totaled 18 last year and three so far this year. He also described recent law-enforcement seizures, including multi-pound fentanyl and meth shipments and pill seizures, and warned of emerging substances such as kratom appearing in overdose reports. "We dropped to 146, total death investigations," Fisher said, and explained that fentanyl and methamphetamine remain the top drug categories tied to fatal overdoses.

Board members asked about trends and pricing; Fisher said prices north of major metro areas remain higher and that seizures at other jurisdictions (Reno, St. George) indicate substantial interdiction activity but that availability persists. He also noted the RUSH program described earlier is already being used by responders to recent traumatic incidents.
