Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital reports major capital additions, charity care and new surgeon

Steve Simpson, Administrator at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital, reviewed recruitment, capital investments and community benefit numbers for the board. He said the hospital welcomed providers in emergency medicine, urology, ophthalmology and behavioral health and noted a new general surgeon, Dr. Mark DeMar, will start seeing patients and performing operations late next month.
Simpson highlighted capital investments and technology upgrades: the hospital was approved for over $6,000,000 in capital spending that includes a new 128-channel MRI system the hospital expects to start using on June 1, and final approval was received to purchase a da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery system (the Xi model) in 2026. "You can see in 2025, we provided over $22,000,000 worth of uncompensated care," Simpson said, noting the hospital's role as a taxpaying institution and the payroll distribution that supports local employment.
Board members asked about community demonstrations of the equipment and Simpson said the hospital plans to allow the public to see the machine outside of the sterile OR environment and to hold outreach events. He also said updated quality reports will be presented at a future meeting.
