Commission approves PO 8039 to replace failing UPS for county servers; insurance to cover cost

Joseph Tongwe, from the county information technology department, reported the county’s main UPS (battery backup) failed to sustain power during an April shutdown and shut off twice, disrupting services. Tongwe said the unit appears to be end of life—possibly damaged in last year’s flood—and IT solicited quotes and selected a vendor to supply a replacement sized to county specifications.
Tongwe said the replacement will be purchased with insurance claim funds; a contractor will install and validate the unit and staff will use an upcoming generator maintenance event to perform a live test. Commissioners approved purchase order PO #8039 to purchase the battery backup device. Tongwe said the expected battery life for the new system is roughly three years for the battery modules and that the county will document testing and maintenance with the vendor.
Commissioners asked about testing protocols and documentation; staff said an electrician or vendor will validate capacity and testing during generator maintenance.
