County awarded $1,536 grant to replace two drum scales for household hazardous waste program

Justin Craig, Environmental Services Director, told commissioners the department received a $1,536 grant to replace two aging drum scales used in the county’s household hazardous waste program. The county purchased two digital, battery‑operated scales—one installed at the facility and one placed in the mobile trailer used by partner counties.
Craig said the grant covers approximately 60% of the scales’ cost; partner counties pay annual membership fees that help cover remaining operational costs and share disposal charges based on weight when waste is picked up by the contractor Clean Harbors of Wichita. The new scales help staff bill and track waste by weight and were already put into service, he said.
Commissioners expressed appreciation for even small grants and asked staff to coordinate usage with partner counties.
