Knox County commissioners approve resolution to charge banking fees to originating funds

The Knox County Board of Commissioners voted Aug. 4 to authorize a resolution directing the treasurer and county auditor to charge banking fees to the fund that generated the underlying transaction rather than placing all fees on the general fund. County Administrator Jason Booth told the board the auditor and treasurer requested the change to make accounting fairer for departmental and special funds.
"So if it's a fee that's initiated by the 9 1 1 fund, then the 9 1 1 fund should should pay for that stop fee or whatever that is," Booth said while describing the proposed bookkeeping change. A motion to approve the resolution was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Booth said most fees will still fall on the general fund, but departments that maintain separate funds — such as the park district, developmental disabilities services or the health department — should bear fees tied to their activity. The action formalizes the auditor's bookkeeping request so staff can implement the fund-level chargebacks.
