City staff updated council on 113 Washington Street Northeast, the former Kevin Matthews pottery, saying the property is tax-forfeit, the occupant was removed and the county plans to clean up the site on Aug. 29 and demolish the building once it takes possession. Staff said utilities had been turned off for years and that county policy often results in demolition of structures on tax-forfeited lots.
Council member Bevins moved (second Erickson) that staff ask the county for clarification about the demolition timeline and whether the structure could be preserved. Council members, including Johnson, said they supported seeking clarification and exploring options to avoid creating a vacant storefront in the downtown core. The motion carried by voice vote.
