Brainerd City Council approved a motion Aug. 3 to schedule a 2027 budget workshop for Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers. Chairman Johnson said the council president, chair of P&F and the city administrator will meet Aug. 26 to prepare materials Johnson said the administrator will have largely completed, enabling the council to set a preliminary levy by Sept. 21 and meet the statutory Sept. 30 deadline.
"And then by September 21, we'll be able to set our preliminary levy, which meets the September 30 statutory deadline," Johnson said during his committee report. Council approved the workshop motion by voice vote and indicated flexibility about whether an additional hour could be added to the council's first September meeting if agendas allow, though the charter deadline requires timely action.
