Council asks staff to study making Oak Street mini roundabouts permanent

Discussion at the Aug. 3 meeting focused on temporary mini roundabouts placed on Oak Street to keep traffic moving during detours. Public works staff explained the temporary roundabouts were installed to reduce backups that four-way stops would create and recommended a traffic-engineering warrant study, crash-history review and drainage evaluation before any permanent conversion.
"I kinda look at roundabouts as kind of a 50 50 of 50% of the public doesn't like them and 50% of the public does," Public Works staff member Paul Sandy said while describing the tradeoffs. Council member Johnson moved to direct staff to prepare cost estimates and a feasibility report (including the traffic study and engineering steps) for making the temporary roundabouts permanent; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
