District says Silvercrest seismic rehab finished on time and under budget

Jeff, the district facilities staff member who presented the slideshow update, said the Silvercrest seismic retrofit began June 2 and reached substantial completion on Aug. 22. "It came in on time and under budget," Jeff said, and credited CCS Engineering Architecture for design and Roehkamp & Jaeger as the construction manager/general contractor in the CMGC delivery approach.

Jeff described targeted repairs that improved structural resilience: exposed steel beams in the library, remediation of rot and termite damage in the music-room south wall, new acoustic panels, and exterior siding choices (metal perimeter with Hardy board by the wall-ball area). He also listed summer maintenance projects at other campuses: restriping parking lots in-house (avoiding a $32,000 quote), a remodeled middle-school bathroom, a new radon mitigation system at Central Howell after tests exceeded the threshold by a small margin, and a replacement walk‑in cooler compressor at the high school. Board members praised the in-house cost savings and emphasized the value of reporting these completed projects to the public.

Jeff and staff also raised continuing maintenance needs: the high-school chiller is undersized and aging, noted Jeff, and repair or replacement was estimated in the $500,000–$1,000,000 range. The board discussed adding the chiller project into next year’s budget and continuing to build a capital-reserve fund for emergent systems.
