Cascade board warns of tighter budget but pledges to protect classroom basics

Superintendent (S4) told the Cascade School District Board on May 11 that the district plans another year of budget reductions while prioritizing core classroom functions. "For the 2nd year in a row, our plan... was to reduce the budget," he said, adding that required resources for instruction will remain even as discretionary supports are scaled back.
S4 put the district's current enrollment at 2,760 students as of May 7 and said that a large senior class means the district could "be short 50 kids just to start" next year if kindergarten enrollment does not increase. The superintendent urged continued close monitoring of sign-ups and described outreach being done at kindergarten roundup events. Board members asked whether typical summer sign-up patterns might increase kindergarten numbers; administrators said past roundups sometimes double early counts but cautioned that the pattern is inconsistent.
