Community development staff asked the finance committee to approve applying for a Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation talent-recruitment grant of $150,000 and requested $30,000 (20% match) from the county’s grant-match support program. The staff presentation said the program would offer down-payment assistance (up to $12,500 per household) for buyers and a $2,500 incentive for renters to help with security deposit and first month’s rent. State eligibility requires recruits to be out-of-state and to verify moving to Vernon County; staff also said it would run the program and perform background checks on participants.
Staff estimated the program could support 10 homebuyers (if all used the full $12,500 buyer assistance) or up to 50 renters (at the $2,500 renter incentive), and reported the City of Viroqua would not apply and the city’s mayor provided a letter of support. The committee voted to approve submission of the grant application and the $30,000 match request from the county grant-match pool.
