Representatives of the Vernon County Historical Society addressed the finance committee to respond to questions that arose after the board's stipend was reduced. Diane Cosi, who identified herself as the society’s board president, said the society holds open meetings, maintains membership and charges suggested admission and research fees.
The society provided a preliminary 2026 budget and told the committee it expects roughly $81,600 in income against projected expenses of $96,003.10, creating a shortfall of $14,007.10. The society also described recent capital improvements (upper-floor air conditioning and heat) funded by a campaign that raised more than $100,000 and said it maintains an equity fund used for one-off projects.
Board members and residents stressed fundraising and membership drives, noted the society’s regular events (strawberry social, cemetery walks) and discussed partnership opportunities and grant eligibility. Staff explained the community development grant (up to $10,000 with a municipal partner) and confirmed that Ho-Chunk funds are available for allocation, with committee members encouraging the society to explore municipal partnerships and grant applications.
Committee members acknowledged county budget pressures and advised the society to plan assuming current funding levels, while offering to work collaboratively on grant applications and outreach strategies.
