The board unanimously approved ZOTA 2026-2, a proposed amendment to Article 10 of the Onslow County Zoning Ordinance to permit alternative landscaping standards within airport property in coordination with the Planning & Development Department. Planning Director Carter Metcalfe said the measure allows adjustments to plant type, location and quantity to "safeguard air operations" and reduce wildlife attractants; airport director Mitch Sprunger said federal grant assurances and the airport's wildlife hazard management plan require such flexibility.
Sprunger told commissioners the change would provide flexibility on upcoming projects such as an entry road enhancement and allow the airport and county to choose plantings that protect airspace and still improve aesthetics. Staff recommended adoption of a statement of consistency and authorization for the chairman to sign required documents.
