Washington County commissioners unanimously proclaimed Aug. 23–29, 2026 as Community Health Worker Awareness and Appreciation Week after a presentation by public-health staff and community partners.
"We are so excited to join you this morning to celebrate community health workers," Dr. Marie Bowman Davis, the county's public health division manager, told the board. Presenters outlined how CHWs support emergency preparedness, vaccine outreach, health-literacy work and assistance with climate-related hazards such as wildfires and extreme heat.
Speakers including Magdalena Ramirez, Kamisha Manley and Lorena Sanchez asked the board to increase recognition and financial support for CHWs, invite CHWs into policy discussions and back wage and career-advancement opportunities to sustain the workforce. Commissioners praised the work and unanimously moved to read and adopt the proclamation.
