The Elko County Board of Commissioners approved the first reading of an ordinance to repeal prior ordinances and resolutions that established the Elko County Weed Control and Pest Abatement District and its associated assessment schedule. Curtis (speaker 11) told the board the combined weed/pest district structure required a separate board for the weed district that the county has been unable to staff, leaving the district without a mechanism to set assessments or move forward.
Commissioners discussed funding implications, city exemptions in the earlier draft and whether a county department model could better deliver weed and pest control without creating a new special improvement district. ‘‘Sometimes you gotta kill your darlings,’’ Curtis said, summarizing the staff recommendation to scrap the current structure and start anew. A motion to approve the ordinance for first reading and move it to second reading and public hearing carried by voice vote.
