School committee debates grading policy, calls for PowerSchool briefing and teacher discretion at elementary level

"The one thing that I want to walk away from this is to change the policy so that elementary level teachers have full discretion over what their students get for a grade," said Member Luke Jensen, calling for policy language that explicitly grants teacher judgment at the elementary level and proposing an "unofficial" traditional-style report card to accompany standards reports so parents can easily see a child's overall performance. Members asked staff to bring a PowerSchool demonstration to a future meeting so the committee can see how configuration changes would affect reporting before any policy edits.
Several members also suggested moving middle‑school reporting to the same output system used in high school (0–100) so students can learn the grading conventions they will see later. No immediate policy changes were adopted; the committee asked the policy subcommittee and staff to prepare language and a PowerSchool presentation for subsequent meetings.
