State auditor demos data explorer to map public cash, unrestricted balances

Auditor's office staff described the new tool intended to consolidate deposit investment reports and annual comprehensive financial reports and make them interactive for policymakers. "This is what I'm calling right now the asset and investment data explorer," Alex Nielsen said while demonstrating deposit breakdowns, heat maps and time-series views from June 2018 through June 2025.
The dashboard can filter by government type and by entity and shows deposit types (checking, money market, PTIF, sweep, savings), fund assignments, and percent change heat maps. Staff cautioned that the dataset treats cash and cash equivalents in aggregate and does not automatically identify the purpose of individual reserves; follow-up calls or surveys to CFOs are planned to clarify why specific balances exist. Staff said they will add relative denominators (percent of budget or revenue) to help identify outliers and will send a CFO survey to gather context before the June meeting.
