The Community Relations Commission advanced a pilot neighborhood storytelling initiative after hearing from historian and content creator Aaron Hellman.
Aaron described a short-video format (roughly 90 seconds to two minutes) that highlights street names, local history and neighborhood identity. ‘‘People are really hungry for this stuff,’’ Aaron said, citing strong engagement metrics for similar videos in South Bend and noting that brief, well-researched stories produce high local interest.
Commission members and Chair discussed practical next steps: the Goshen Historical Society has offered archival photos and research help; the commission proposed three subcommittees (storytelling & communications, community engagement, neighborhood resources) to develop topics, production workflows and distribution. Aaron estimated that producing a short video from existing research takes about an hour, while creating a story from scratch can take two to three hours depending on research intensity.
Commissioners asked Aaron to prepare a short proposal outlining scope and fees, and Chair said the commission has neighborhood-resources funds available for an initial consultant engagement. The commission agreed to collect story ideas and candidates for subcommittees and to reconvene with a more detailed plan.
