District highlights gains on new California Dashboard; trustees press for localized supports at Arroyo

District education leaders presented the California Dashboard results released Nov. 13 and described areas of improvement and continued focus at the board meeting on Dec. 10.
Dr. Laura Rivas said the district saw improvement in English-learner progress and gains in ELA and math at many sites, noting, "the state released the California dashboard on November 13." Presenters described graduation rate increases districtwide and highlighted work on common assessments, credit recovery and expanded supports for English learners and students with disabilities.
Trustees probed site-level variances. Trustee Dr. Luis Guzman pressed staff about Orange/Yellow shifts at Arroyo High School for suspension rate and the college-and-career indicator; Alejandro Leon and Dr. McGinnis explained localized factors (fights, vaping) and said the district uses live monitoring tools, restorative practices and expanded wellness resources to address those trends. "We are bringing in additional resources ... and we will actively monitor the data," Alejandro Leon said when describing next steps.
Staff also outlined that the science assessment will serve as a new baseline in 2025 and that the district plans additional professional development with LACOE to support biology and other science instruction. Trustees praised site work where indicators improved and asked for follow-up reporting to the board and in Friday memos on specific suspension incident counts and intervention plans.
