Jill Anderson presented the board with a progress update on Priority 3.2, focused on strengthening partnerships with industry and higher education and expanding hands‑on opportunities for students and staff.
Anderson said the district’s baseline when the strategic plan began was 22 internships and 22 externships and that the goal is to reach 32 internships and 30 externships. "So our baseline, whenever we started the strategic plan, was we were at 22 internships and 22 externships…Our goal is to reach 32 internships and 30 externships," she told trustees. She reported specific progress in welding internships (from 9 last year to 14 so far) and noted the Career and Technical Education office applied for a TEA internship grant in January. Anderson also described a tiered partnership and sponsorship framework to structure community engagement and reported fundraising and partner metrics (129 partners and $589,000 in 2023–24; 97 partners and $288,000 so far this year, excluding some Education Foundation grants).
She highlighted Dream Couture as the February community partner, praising its work providing dresses, styling and other prom supports to students who might otherwise face financial barriers. The district said externships for staff will be offered in partnership with the Waco Chamber of Commerce and the Workforce Commission and that staff will report back as these summer opportunities are put in place.
