The Blue Lake City Council voted July 28 to accept a multi-part donation from the Brunson Family Trust that, as presented by parks staff, would direct $150,000 to the bike & skate park project, $50,000 to Perrigo/Prash Hall facility improvements, and the remainder into an endowment held by the Humboldt Area Foundation for park-related annual distributions.
Parks staff said the donations will initially be held by the Humboldt Area Foundation and distributed under a grant agreement; staff said the city will review the foundation’s standard grant terms before final execution. "I would expect that's going to be a couple months down the road," the city manager said when asked whether the council should wait to accept until seeing the final agreement. Council member Napier moved to accept the donation and authorize the city manager to execute any necessary agreements; the motion passed.
Council members asked staff to review grant terms for reversion or clawback language and to ensure that donor intent — funds used specifically to finish the bike park — is respected. Some members recommended using the donation as matching funds for state-per-capita grants to leverage larger external dollars and protect donor intent.
The council approved acceptance by voice vote; staff said the council will have a chance to review the final grant agreement before signature.
