Board pauses TCI social-studies adoption after members flag perceived slant

The board discussed adoption of the TCI social-studies curriculum for grades 6–12 but the motion failed to secure a second and therefore did not pass. Several board members said they appreciated the curriculum's flexibility and classroom activities but objected to language in some textbook passages that they felt presented opinionated interpretations rather than objective descriptions.
Board member Linda Harrington read an excerpt she found objectionable and urged further vetting. "For all his fine words about liberty and equality, he was unwilling to apply his self evident truths to the people he held in *******," she read from the text and said that wording risks advocacy rather than neutral instruction. Teacher representatives and the curriculum team defended TCI's engagement model and said teachers can implement it with professional judgment; staff agreed to revisit other accredited vendors, including McGraw Hill, and to involve the social-studies team in follow-up review.
