City seeks grants for SR 507 roundabouts and trail crossing beacons

City staff said they applied to the Thurston Regional Planning Council Rural Community Support Program for funding to design and plan two roundabouts on SR 507 (Center Street and Minnesota intersections) and to install two rapid flashing beacons for trail crossings. The total amount requested across two applications is $310,500; the roundabout planning portion is $91,800 and the beacon project totals $218,700 and includes solar-powered beacons, ADA ramps with detectable warnings and sidewalk connections.
Staff said the planning grant work would include intersection control evaluations, field surveys, turn analyses and geometric layouts to ensure vehicles and pedestrians can be accommodated and to evaluate right-of-way needs. The projects are intended to position the city to seek funds for full engineering design, right-of-way acquisition and construction.
