Beckett Bridge construction depends on county grant; city may face up to $5.2M loan if unsuccessful

Tommy Kiger updated the commission that the Beckett Bridge project remains pending a county grant decision and is not currently included in the FY27 draft budget. Kiger said construction cost estimates are in the neighborhood of $5.2 million and that the county has applied for the grant which would shift much of the burden away from the city.
"The construction cost is, $5,200,000, and that would be planned for loan funding," Kiger said, adding that if the grant is approved the city's net cost might drop substantially — to roughly $1 million or so for utility work — but if the grant fails the city would need to borrow to fund the work or push the project out. Commissioners asked for continued updates and for county coordination on schedule and funding.
