Board approves 3rd–5th grade ELA curriculum after amendment fails

The Chelsea School District Board of Education voted March 10 to approve the recommended 3rd–5th grade English language arts curriculum following a staff recommendation from Superintendent Kapolka.
An amendment offered by board member Eric Wilkinson would have added a directive for the Board Curriculum Committee to assess the district's curriculum review process and deliver recommendations by Oct. 30, 2025. "The Board directs the Board Curriculum committee to assess the Curriculum review process and provide recommendations for improvement no later than October 30, 2025 for Board review and approval," the amendment motion stated; the amendment failed on a 3–4 vote (Wilkinson, Michelle Craig and Erin Hunt-Carter voted yea; Glenn Fox, Kate Henson, Heidi Reyst and Sara Tracy voted nay).
After the amendment failed, the original motion to approve the 3rd–5th grade ELA curriculum passed 6–1, with Eric Wilkinson the lone dissenting vote. Superintendent Kapolka had presented the curriculum recommendation to the board during the meeting's presentation portion.
Board members discussed the curriculum review process during debate but did not approve the proposed committee directive. The board's vote concludes the formal adoption step recorded in the March 10 meeting; implementation timing and classroom roll-out were not specified in the minutes presented to the board.
