County to arm two court screeners as part of district-court security changes

Riley County Police presented a security plan to arm two court screeners at the district court, with the goal of strengthening entrance security and returning sworn officers to patrol duties.
Major Daryl Asher told the commission, "One of the things that we've addressed is we've chose to arm 2 of our court screeners at this time." He said the screeners would receive the same firearms and use-of-force training as sworn officers and that the department had coordinated with HR, liability insurance and legal staff. The change is intended to improve initial entrance security and is supported by the law board and by the department’s liability carrier, Asher said.
Commissioners acknowledged the change and discussed impacts on officer staffing and training schedules; staff said the edit to the job description and training plan had been completed and that premiums would not increase as a result of the move.
