U-46 board adopts IASB policy updates covering records, student conduct and wellness

The SD U-46 Board of Education on Aug. 3 adopted a multi-policy package of amendments from the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB). The changes — presented by district staff as primarily technical updates to citations and optional language choices — covered access to public records, grievance procedures, staff leave and benefits, school wellness, student harassment, admissions and bus conduct, among other items. Each policy was moved, seconded and approved on roll call.

A board member asked for clarification about the public-records language that excludes “junk mail.” A district staff member responded that state guidance requires entities to make reasonable efforts to locate and respond to valid records even if they are captured by spam filters: "The Illinois attorney general's office public information officer has actually held that boards, and public entities that do have filters that catch emails are nonetheless still held to obligation to respond to those." The board voted to adopt the recommended default or historically consistent language for the items presented; minutes show roll-call approval on each policy with the motion carried.
