Cycling organizer asks Mills County for temporary signage at Glenwood gravel event

Chris McQueen, who runs the Iowa Gravel Series, asked Mills County officials for temporary signage at two short windows during a gravel bicycle event in Glenwood to warn drivers that cyclists will be on local roads.
"The cyclists will be leaving the preserve on the South end of the preserve and entering the road on to Caine Ave...And so the goal is to not close the road to traffic or put any do, you know, unneeded burden on the public," McQueen said, describing two key times — roughly 7 a.m. for the group start and about 10–10:30 a.m. when the first riders are expected to return. He said the event usually attracts 100–200 participants.
County staff and board members acknowledged the request but raised liability and equipment questions. A secondary-roads representative said the department has general caution and road-closure signs but not specialized cycling placards and recommended McQueen coordinate with the county attorney and the sheriff. Staff noted the request arrived too late to place on the agenda and encouraged the organizer to coordinate immediately for this weekend and to plan earlier next year.
The board did not vote on the request at the meeting. Staff offered to follow up with the organizer and to copy board members on any coordination with the sheriff and secondary roads.
