Grove Church honored for volunteer 'iHeart' week; city showcases summer interns

Mayor Nehring opened the meeting by thanking volunteers and presenting an Outstanding Volunteer Award to The Grove Church for its annual iHeart service week. He highlighted the scope of work completed in one week, saying, "In just 1 week, 72 volunteers donated 572 hours of service to improve our parks, trails and public spaces across the city." The mayor presented a plaque and a challenge coin to recognize the effort.
Director Hodgson introduced HR business partner Lisonbee Engstrom, who described the city's 2026 summer intern program and introduced the current interns and their department assignments. Engstrom said the program runs 6–8 weeks, hosts up to six interns each season and has grown since the current format began under the 2023–24 biennium budget. "We've all been really impressed with them so far," Engstrom said as she named interns assigned to information systems, police records, human resources, engineering services and communications.
The council thanked the volunteers and interns and invited them to stay for the meeting or return for future events. City staff said they plan to continue the internship format into the next biennium as a proposed budget item.
