Public works reports spring maintenance and identifies backup fire pump issues

Theron, the city's public works director, provided a spring maintenance update and described results of recent fire-flow testing.
Theron said crews began spring mowing, changed equipment out of winter mode, rented a street sweeper and had completed replanting work at the Rainier sign. "Paul did a beautiful job of replanting under the Rainier sign here," he said.
He told the council that fire-flow testing exposed issues with the backup fire pump, including a dead battery and failures of the automatic start. "We've installed new battery. We've done fluid and filter changes on it. We've got the pump running," Theron said, adding that a few intermittent problems remain and crews are preparing a substantial test once the issues are resolved.
Theron also reported that two apple trees on the trail had been cut and staff had no leads on who did it, prompting council members to refer to the unknown cutter as a "chainsaw bandit."
