MAPS board hears facilities-planning survey with $60M–$90M bond scenarios

Superintendent Zack Sedgwick updated the Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education on the district's facilities-planning survey and potential bond scenarios, saying the district is asking residents to weigh priorities and funding options ahead of any formal proposal. "The survey is open until October 3, 2025," Sedgwick said.
The survey, conducted by School Perceptions LLC, outlines a Base Plan estimated at $60 million to address Priority 1 projects identified in a State of Michigan study and the district's own facilities review. Priority 1 work in the packet includes updating elevators, restrooms and interior doors to meet ADA standards; replacing outdated HVAC systems, boilers and controls; asbestos abatement; replacing worn furniture, finishes, floors and ceilings; and improvements to Career and Technical Education spaces, Kaufman Auditorium, music and art areas, gym floors and locker rooms. The board packet also presented three expanded options that add Priority 2 work: $70 million (Base + $10M), $80 million (Base + $20M) and $90 million (Base + $30M).
Sedgwick said the district will mail the survey to residents and host two community information sessions in the Marquette Senior High School Little Theatre on Sept. 22 and Sept. 23 at 5:30 p.m. Results are scheduled to be shared at the board meeting on Oct. 13 and posted on the district website. The presentation did not constitute a bond proposal vote; trustees received the update and information about how residents can provide input.
