County advances new transfer station plans; site will reuse existing public access and include top-load tunnels

Solid Waste Director Blair Hillam presented the proposed location and preliminary design for a new transfer station and asked commissioners to confirm the site so design drawings can proceed. "So this drawing, this is the proposed location of the new transfer station," Hillam said, and added that public access would remain where it is while a dedicated inbound entrance would be used for trucks.
Hillam described the facility as a top-load building (no compactors) with two tunnels and offset pits and said each tunnel will have about a 45-foot poured pit so crews can load two trucks at a time. He gave a preliminary footprint of "175 by 200" feet after sewer constraints reduced a larger design and said the new facility will handle most household residential loads while the old facility will continue handling commercial and bulky items. Staff also agreed to include irrigation and tree-protection measures in the landscaping plan and to return with engineering details about grading and any necessary blasting.
