Visitor warns of repeated near-misses at Iona–Highway 26; county will ask state about earlier changes

Rick Kirky, introduced as a visiting public works director from a neighboring city, described frequent hazardous driving interactions at the Highway 26 and Iona intersection and urged the county to explore faster mitigation. "I was nearly killed again last week at that intersection from people both making left turns," Kirky said, describing near-miss incidents he experiences monthly.
Lance Bates said the state's larger Highway 26 project (including the Island Road roundabout and related work) is anticipated to bid in late fall or early spring and construct next year, but staff can ask the state whether interim traffic-control measures are possible. Commissioners asked staff to pursue the question and report back to determine whether earlier action could reduce collision risk.
